A summer ‘garden’ party for this mama-to-be! When planning this celebration, we (my mom, sisters + me) knew it was a challenge and delicate matter given the current state of the world. We opted to gather in person regardless, and put measures in place to be mindful of people’s comfort level in attending. Here are a few tips that we implemented, for planning a gathering during this time:

  1. Acknowledge the current situation on the invitation for your guests: We know this is a strange time. We know everyone is in a different place with it. We are gathering in person and will be providing options to do so safely.

  2. Make it an open house! To ensure everyone’s comfort, we made the shower 3-hours long and noted on the invite that it was an open house. By giving people the freedom to come and go as they please, you are allowing them control of the situation and making sure they feel comfortable attending.

  3. Host outdoors + have multiple seating areas set up. This seems like a no-brainer, and will be dependent on your guest list if/how you do this. Make sure to have an option for several seating arrangements in small groups 2-4 people, available for your guests.

  4. Individual food/beverage: People may not be comfortable “sharing” food and serving utensils. We opted for individually wrapped sandwiches, fruit + vegetable cups, cans of sparkling water. This meant minimal interaction for guests when it came to food. NOTE: you don’t have to go above and beyond when it comes to food at a shower! The simpler, the better. Light bites and options to pick as people please.

  5. Be okay with what people RSVP: We had a lovely turnout despite the time. Those who felt comfortable attended and appreciated the opportunity to gather after so many months apart. Those who weren’t comfortable, sent their regards. Both options were perfectly okay with us. Regardless, we knew we wanted to celebrate our sister and would have done so whether or not anyone were able to attend!
